Thanks for pointing out this bug. I think that adopting your solution (restricting to only names that do not have a language tag) would work in most cases, but  would break for a person who has only a single foaf:name and that foaf:name has a language tag.

I'm trying to think about generic solutions to the problem that can be expressed in SPARQL alone. (If I saved state then i could use the same smushing techniques that I use for the main list of people in the calendar demo.) Will let you know what I come up with, or if I put in your FILTER suggestion.
