Welcher branch braucht Continuous Integration?

Wenn man sich so ein branch model, oder eher eine Source Code Management Strategie, anschaut, dann wird man schnell feststellen, dass nur zwei der vielen branches wirklich mit Continuous Integration abgedeckt werden müssen: develop und hotfixes.

Im develop branch laufen alle aktuellen Entwicklungen zusammen, z. B. wenn ein Entwickler meint, er habe sein feature fertig: es wird zurück in den develop branch gebracht. Vorher hat der Entwickler (weil wir ja gern TDD machen) sichergestellt, dass das feature eine ausreichende Unit Test Abdeckung hat. Für ihn persönlich sollte es also ausreichend sein auf diese zu achten. Eine persönliche CI für sein feature wäre sicherlich ein adminitrativer overkill: ist das feature klein wird es sicher schnell fertig, dafür extra einen neuen CI job aufsetzen und nach Beendigung der feature Entwicklung wieder löschen?! Ne!

Der release branch benötigt aus anderen Gründen keine CI: er unterliegt nur einer kurzen Zeit wirklicher Entwicklungsarbeit: während der Erstellung eines Release.

Wichtiger ist dann schon der master branch. Er enthält den Source Code der aktuell in der Produktion verwendet wird. Aber: gegen ihn werden auch hotfixes durchgeführt! Also Änderungen am Produktions Kode. Diese sollten frühzeitig mit CI abgedeckt werden, jeder hotfix branch sollte also einen eigenen CI job haben. Ist der hotfix gut und es werden keine Integrationsfehler (mit dem Produktions Kode) mehr festgestellt, dann ist der hotfix fertig in den master branch überzugehen (und in develop).

Back in May Uldis Bojars asked me if I would like to join the program committee for a series of workshops called “Social Data on the Web workshop (SDoW2008) co-located with the 7th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2008)”. As I am a great procrastinator and deadlines appear closed than they are I started reviewing two papers both found in the domain of tags and online presence.

implementing a moat server

This night I installed a moat server to serve up the tags I use to tag in my RDF files, like first rough scratch. You will find it at tags.b4mad.net …

A moat server is a piece of software accessible via HTTP and delivery HTML, RDF/XML or JSON representations of the meaning of a tag. moat server by Alexandre Passant drives my installation. It leverages PHP, MySQL and ARC2 do to its job. One feature I do miss is something like a scutter to gather data I may have published earlier.

Update xmlgrddl could be a good thing to extract tags from every post… need to have a look

Sparqling a nodelist List

ok, this is rather trivial but good as a reminder for myself. Having the list of XMPP Publish-Subscribe Nodes noted down as in my scratch file figuring out what nodes I use is pretty easy with SPARQL:

digging into XMPP/Jabber pubsub again, for micropublishing

For the last few days I tries to relax by having some ideas how to make the micropublishing world a better place. I would like to be able to push information to some of my peers. Not only that I would like to save a bookmark at delicious and tag it with “for:someone”. I would like to have a more instant way to show them what gets my attention at the moment and what I think might interest them.

The weapon of choice for near real time information delivery is obviously XMPP. I will use publish-subscribe to provide information, by doing so any of my peers may or may not subscribe to a node onto which I publish information. And I will set up a hierarchy of nodes onto which I will publish different kinds of information. So here we go with the root node: home/b4mad.net/goern, this is mainly due to the fact that I use ejabberd2 to run my XMPP Server. There are a few subnodes:

bookmark – for bookmarks that I send out, I need to figure out the format of published information
micropublish – for twitter like things, that is basically Atom over XMPP
media/stillimage – for a photostream…

As a good semantic web citizen I will note down what nodes exist at which URI and what they are used for. The first rough scratch is available.

For the moment there is a shell like Java application which accepts two commands: exit and purge, to exit the shell and purge off all items from the micropublish node. Any other words typed in the shell will be treated a an micropublish update and published as a Atom entry to my micropublish node. The second application is a gateway to twitter.com: it is subscribed to my pubsub micropublish node and will pick up any atom entry and post it as a twitter update.

The next thing it write up is a process and format to publish my bookmarks and to have some nice GUI clients that can handle my updates… Or should it be integrated into WorkPress?!

Online Services account cleanup!

As time goes by online services rise and fall, at least my usage of them. So I have sat back and looked at the services I use and at which to delete my accounts (or try to delete my accounts).

Flickr.com – is good for sharing photos, but their time has come. Most important the censorship issues mark the point to flag flickr as “need to migrate away from it”. By now it is still in my accounts file

jaiku.com – is aggregating other services and trying to give a timeline of my online footsteps. This is a good services from the point of “declarative living”, but: delete account, because:
noserub has been implemented at #B4mad.Net this is good, as I take back control of my data back from jaiku
mugshut.org is kind of the same thing, never really used it…

all this SIP and VoIP accounts need to be deleted: mobile phones are not replacable
plazes.com is kind of good as a location/presence services. I need to figure out how to do that with geonames.org and noserub by myself!
openbc.com or xing… what is the value add of this service?
upcoming.com and calendar.google.com – upcoming supports venues and is more like “calendar sharing” google calendar is … do I really need this?

I will try to consolidate even more and provide one web view of all that and one xmpp infrastructure to deliver updates to interessted agents/persons.

The requirements read something like “Any Intel-based Mac running OS X 10.4″ Whats wrong with you guys? PowerBooks and G5′s may be arround by today…

Today I started the KK (which is the initiation of the transfer from on provider to another) for b4mad.net, this is the step before the last of migration of #B4mad webservices from 1und1 to Hetzner.

So what to do if you move to a new neighborhood and badly need a hair cut? As a semantic web guy I would start up my cool MacOS application and give the search box a “frisÃ¶r in der nÃ¤he” (“barber shop nearby”). But that cool application: command not found… So the next best option is google

Using their maps I tried to locate myself which is pretty easy.Â Why I have to do that by myself? This information is actually available online as a SPARQL result, Google could be aware of that…

Ok, next step: I need a Frisör (barber) nearby, just look for barber shops at Google Maps nearby the location I just found. Now I need to have a look at the screen just because Google is not aware of what “near by” means, for me it means “within walking distance” (approx. 1km).

3rd step: have a walk… will report back when I returned

Hey all, I will be migration the #B4mad internet services from 1und1 (which was once schlund.de) to hetzner. Service quality and business behavior of 1und1 is much lower than Schlund… feel free to experience very short service outages.

First step of the migration will be a redirect of b4mad.net URL to b4mad-service.net URL (as you may see above).

Second step is to transfer the b4mad.net POP3 mailboxes over to hetzner and reconnect the domain…

Final step is to upgrade WordPress to it”s most up to date version.

Linking personal content as a basis for a new personal homepage

Cloud recently wrote (and diagramed) how SIOC and SIOC Types may help to link all the content a single person produces together.Â From my point of view this is something like “subscribe to my brain++”: it helps me to give others a quick overview of what I am producing.Â And futher more it is the basis for a new kind of personal home page: a portal to Me.

One thing that is pretty important and not included yet (or I have overseen it) are comments or trackbacks. All that comments made on flickr by myself or the podcasts that are comments on other podcasts…

At least, there is no reason to have mugshot for me. First of all there is no desktop integration for MacOSX, so I don not receive any updates of the stuff going on in my social network. Second, no RSS feed to pick the data up… Third, if they use XMPP why is there no Jabber bot to deliver updates straight into my Jabber client?

So I will check back in half a year, anyway: thanks for the service and for investments made!

API is nice, but not for mugshot

Providing some REST or XML-RPC way is a cool thing for a community site. If the site specializes in a per person aggregation of data sources that a person provides offsite, that could be thought of as a dump of things a person publishes anywhere. So being a data sink one must provide a query interface and not a API, which means SPARQL in our days.

mugshot provides a wiki to discuss ideas for the mugshot API. Time to give them ideas…
